Background
Merseytravel took the decision to develop and implement a Public Art Strategy which was officially adopted in 2005. This document outlines the guidelines for the inclusion of Public Art onto the transport network within Merseyside, and was revised in 2010 to ensure that it is up to date and fit for purpose.
Since the success of the European Capital of Culture Year 2008, Liverpool has repositioned itself as a vibrant, safe and welcoming City and we feel that it is important this is reflected onto the transport network. Merseytravel believes the Public Art Strategy will prove a vital tool towards achieving this goal.
Over the last few years the Public Art programme has gone from strength to strength seeing some high profile pieces of Public Art being installed on the network from Ken Dodd and Bessie Braddock at Lime Street to Amazing Grace at Pier Head Ferry Terminal.
Merseytravel strongly believes that art, culture and accessibility are important policy areas that will shape the region, contribute toward the economic regeneration, and to the City Regions appeal as a tourist destination. But most importantly improve the journey experience for our passengers.
